Environmental Issues
The waterways around Jamaica Bay have many existing and now more issues caused by Super Storm Sandy. When will these issues be fixed or addressed by our government? In the photos below you can see the exposed blocks for the NYC Parks multi-million dollar White Island shoreline stabilization. Super Storm Sandy moved the sand and took the plantings away. The storm destroyed many docks, bulkheads, boats and debris from yards and streets that now float in local navigable channels with each tide. Many abandoned docks and sunken boats are tied to city property along Knapp street. The environmental and navigable hazards move where the tide and wind pushes it everyday along its journey. The debris that gets stuck behind the salt marsh will continue to destroy this very important vegetation. The sand from beaches and shoreline have been lost including blocking a very large part of the entrance to the Port of Sheepshead Bay. Imagine riding on a fishing boat leaving or returning in Sheepshead bay and you hit bottom in the middle of the channel. This needs to be fixed for the fishing and party boat fleet that depends on this great port in Brooklyn. If these issues would have a larger affect on tourism or commercial shipping it would have been completed already. Since it's the tax paying residents of NYC that have to deal with the issues it may never get done. We hope those that care about the environmental and recreational safety of the waterways can get the help from our government to make it safer for everyone's future.
